The Ukrainian–Soviet War (1917–1921) was a crucial chapter in Ukraine's history and an early struggle for national independence. After the collapse of the Russian Empire during the First World War, Ukrainians saw an opportunity to establish their own sovereign state. The Ukrainian People's Republic declared independence in January 1918, expressing the desire of many Ukrainians to govern themselves and preserve their national identity. The Bolshevik government in Russia did not recognize Ukraine's independence and sought to bring the region under Soviet control. This led to a military conflict that became part of the wider Russian Civil War. While the war involved many different armies and political movements, many Ukrainians viewed the Soviet advance as an effort to prevent the creation of an independent Ukrainian state. The Ukrainian People's Republic faced enormous challenges. Its army had limited resources, political divisions weakened the government, and Ukraine found itself surrounded by powerful enemies. In addition to Soviet forces, the country had to contend with White Russian armies, foreign intervention, and shifting alliances. These circumstances made defending independence extremely difficult. Despite these hardships, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers continued to fight for their country's future. Many believed that Ukraine, like other European nations, had the right to determine its own political destiny. Their determination and sacrifice became lasting symbols of the struggle for national sovereignty. The war brought great suffering to civilians. Cities and villages were damaged, the economy declined, and many families were forced to flee their homes. Constant fighting and political instability affected everyday life across the country, leaving deep scars that lasted long after the conflict ended. By 1921, Soviet forces had gained control of most of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian People's Republic could no longer function as an independent government. Ukraine became the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, later one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union. Although the dream of independence was temporarily defeated, it was not forgotten. Ukrainian communities both at home and abroad continued to preserve the memory of the republic and its fight for freedom. When Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, many people viewed it as the fulfillment of the aspirations first expressed during the years of the Ukrainian People's Republic. The war of 1917–1921 is therefore remembered by many Ukrainians as an important milestone in their nation's history. It symbolizes the determination to preserve national identity, defend sovereignty, and pursue the right of self-determination despite overwhelming challenges.
