@lunderwood56: If your shop is doing 4% net… why are you even in business? You’re taking all the risk. You’re dealing with people, problems, stress every single day—and you’re getting savings account returns. That doesn’t make sense to me. At some point, we started accepting survival as success in this industry, and I just don’t agree with that. Now I’m not saying it’s easy. I’m not saying I’ve got it all figured out. But I am saying this—we should be building businesses that actually pay us back for the risk we take. Something that’s profitable, scalable, and gives you a life outside the shop. I took all the classes, seminars, and purchased all the software. At times I hit 13%-23% but over the whole year my average was 9% the longer you hold on to valued employees, the more vacation you pay .

Lots of small shops aren't businesses, they're people who "own a job". Which is why they close when the owner/lead mechanic/front counter combination employee retires. Probably kills the average.
