Listing everything about a character's background is not good writing. Good character writing is framed though how they change based on the stories and experiences that happen to them. A one dimensional character's decision making would be predictable and practically meaningless, whereas a three dimensional character's decisions and behaviour would be informed by their past and personality, which can absolutely be ambiguous to the reader where necessary.

His “lesson” completely went off the rails with the 3D characters. What you need for 3D characters is for them to have conflicting values, goals and desires, and some backstory. You don’t need to know them “inside and out” and why they do everything they do, you discover most of that.
