The most important for a beginner is to understand that there's no force pulling you when you are free falling. you are weightless. only when Earth's surface pushes you back you feel the force. That's what gives us weight. if it was a force pulling we will feel that force when falling

the force pulling us toward earth is called gravity indeed, thats why we have weight. in space there is no weight because you're not close enough to an gravitational feilds. the astronaut on the ISS experience weightlessness as a product of inertia. momentum. because they are orbiting the earth, or "falling around te earth" as they would put it. because gravity AND inertia allow them to keep falling toward the earth the inertia part is its momentum going around the earth. thats why earth orbits the sun.

Yes physics education still uses a force pulling us towards the center of the earth for every calculation..
