@thevoidhole: POV: You Wake Up in Jonestown, November 1978 In November 1978, the remote agricultural commune known as Jonestown became the site of one of the most disturbing mass death events in modern history. The settlement had been created by followers of Jim Jones, the charismatic and increasingly unstable leader of the Peoples Temple. Jones originally built his reputation in the 1950s and 1960s as a preacher who promoted racial integration and social equality. At a time when many churches in the United States were still segregated, his message of unity attracted a large and diverse following. The Peoples Temple provided food programs, housing assistance, and community services, which brought in thousands of members, many of whom believed they were part of a progressive movement for social change. Over time, however, Jones became increasingly controlling and paranoid. In the mid 1970s, as criticism of the group grew in the United States, he relocated hundreds of followers to Guyana in South America. There they built Jonestown, a remote jungle settlement meant to function as a self sustaining socialist community. At first glance, Jonestown appeared peaceful. Members farmed crops, held meetings, and lived communally in wooden cabins surrounded by dense jungle. But life inside the settlement was far more restrictive than it appeared. Armed guards watched the perimeter, members’ movements were controlled, and loudspeakers broadcast Jones’s voice across the camp day and night. Long political lectures and loyalty tests became common, and many residents were isolated from the outside world. Concern about the group eventually reached the U.S. government. In November 1978, Leo Ryan traveled to Guyana to investigate reports of abuse and to check on American citizens living in Jonestown. During his visit, several residents quietly asked to leave with him. As Ryan and the defectors prepared to depart from a nearby airstrip, armed members of the Peoples Temple attacked. Ryan and four others were killed in the ambush. Back in Jonestown, Jones gathered the community in the central pavilion. Over the loudspeaker system he declared that the attack meant retaliation from the United States was inevitable. He told followers that their only option was what he called “revolutionary suicide.” A fruit drink mixture containing poison was prepared and distributed. By the end of that evening, more than 900 people had died, including over 300 children. The event became known as the Jonestown massacre, one of the largest single losses of American civilian life prior to the attacks of September 11, 2001. Investigations later revealed that many residents likely did not participate willingly. Witness accounts and recordings from the final meeting suggested that armed guards surrounded the pavilion and that some people were forced or coerced. #DisturbingFootage #TheVoidHole
