@circuitboredd: How to setup a a personal cloud where you don’t need to continually pay subscription fees. We went with Synology for the security and software that comes along with it. Stay tuned for the full setup to get a good idea on how easy of a system this is to make! #editing #editor #photography #videography #pcbuild

iCloud is 12.99 for 12TB a month. So 155.88 a year. You think you’ll give it up after a couple years? No….because you’re storing your life on it. So a NAS is like, $200; decent HDD is like 100 each, so on the low maybe $500. In 3 years this pays its self off. And you can expend as much as you want

@nickayyyx3: Synology 5-bay disk station: $799. Synology Hat3300-16TB: about $450 per disk (5). So this is a total of about $2,600 set up.

People saying that this price doesn’t make sense are forgetting that technically, what you have on the cloud is subject to someone else’s rules, someone else’s standards, and at the whim of someone else continuing the service. Just because something that someone else is doing right now is not financially viable for you at the moment does not mean it’s a bad idea and does not mean it’s not something you can do at a smaller scale. Consider taking some of your storage local.

Until they start a subscription fee. That’s what they all do. It’s free until it’s NOT.

As an ad, the video works well. But if you actually go down this route, it gets very expensive. A basic setup can cost around €1200. You also need to replace the drives every few years, which adds ongoing cost. I run a business and store large amounts of data in the cloud. I pay €9.99 per month for 20TB, which covers everything I need securely. I also pay extra for Lightroom, but that is part of the job. This is just a normal business expense. If you drive, you pay for fuel. If you work with large files, you pay for storage. Synology looks attractive, but right now it is expensive and requires you to manage everything yourself. There is a lot of hype around it, but in practice, it is not as cost effective or convenient as cloud options like Google Drive, Lightroom, or iCloud Photos.
