People need to stop assuming every tragic postpartum case is just depression. Postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD and postpartum psychosis are completely different conditions with very different severity. The rare extreme cases are usually linked to much more serious psychiatric illness, not what most people mean when they say PPD. Saying “I had PPD and wouldn’t do this” shows a misunderstanding of how complex perinatal mental health actually is. Mental illness isn’t one experience or one scale. This is a tragedy and absolutely horrific to think about. Less shame, more understanding, more research, more support. That’s what we need.
