Chinese Woman Sent 2,200 Pounds Of Onions To Her Ex Boyfriend After Breakup In 2020, a woman from Zibo in China’s Shandong province became widely known online after sending about 2,200 pounds of red onions to her ex boyfriend’s apartment following their breakup. The woman, identified by her surname Zhao, said she had been emotionally devastated after the relationship ended and spent several days crying. According to Chinese media reports, she later heard from mutual friends that her ex boyfriend appeared completely unaffected by the breakup, which upset her further. Wanting him to experience the same sadness she felt, she came up with the unusual idea of sending onions to his home because onions are commonly associated with causing tears. Zhao reportedly ordered around 2,200 pounds of red onions and arranged for them to be delivered directly to her ex boyfriend’s residential building. She instructed the delivery workers to leave the onions outside his door and included a handwritten message telling him that she had cried for three days and now it was his turn to cry. Reports stated that the workers spent several hours unloading the enormous quantity of onions. Photos and videos of the stacked onions quickly spread across Chinese social media platforms and later appeared in international news coverage. Some people online viewed the incident as humorous and creative, while others criticized it as wasteful and immature. Her ex boyfriend later responded publicly, saying he did not cry over the breakup and describing the gesture as dramatic.
