An Educational Look at How Axolotl Eggs Develop. Look at these tiny baby axolotls hatching and wiggling around in the water! The axolotl, often called the "walking fish," is actually a unique amphibian that remains in its larval stage throughout its entire life. But before it becomes that adorable, gilled creature, it starts as a tiny, jelly-like egg no bigger than a pea. The development of axolotl eggs is a fascinating process that takes about 10 to 14 days, depending on water temperature. · Days 1–3: The egg is a small, dark sphere surrounded by a clear, gelatinous capsule. Inside, the embryo begins to divide and form the basic body plan. You can already see a faint line that will become the neural tube — the beginning of the nervous system. · Days 4–6: The embryo starts to take shape. Tiny eyes, gill buds, and a tail become visible. At this stage, you can even see the heart beginning to pulse — a tiny, rhythmic flicker visible under a microscope. · Days 7–10: The larvae become more defined. External gills — those signature feathery frills — start to branch out. The embryo moves inside the egg, occasionally twisting and turning. · Days 11–14: The young axolotl is fully formed. It has functional gills, a mouth, and tiny limbs. Just before hatching, it becomes more active, and finally, it breaks through the jelly capsule to begin its life as a free-swimming larva. Watching this process under time-lapse photography reveals just how intricate and fragile this development is — a true miracle of nature, happening in a drop of water.
