@ashleythomason23: Replying to @Antonietta De Falco set up a reaction under nitrogen w/ me!!! 💖 disclaimer: most of rxns that I do are water sensitive not oxygen and need to be as dry as possible but will still work well if the atmosphere isn’t perfect inert! #organicchemistry #totalsynthesis #phdstudent #schlenkline #georgiatech
Omg hi Ashley, idk if u remember me but I hope you’re doing well!!

I worked with pyridine for so long that I'm basically nose blind to it now. Definitely unpleasant, and I had mixed feelings about not really being able to smell it any more.

Question. Is the balloon necessary to keep a nitrogen environment if the environment in the flask is already under nitrogen and its closed off by the septa?

i HATE the smell of pyridine, but once i worked with thioacetic acid, pyridine is light work

Do they teach these things in the PhD or in the undergraduate programme?

Just an idea! When you pull your flask from the oven add the heated stir bar then cap and cool under vacuum. Cooling it open to the air condenses water on the surface

You should have a schlenk line in your hood with the still and then take your flask to the still rather than walking around with a big ass needle. Also adding an exit needle into your septa when adding the dcm will make it a lot easier to add
