@rootedbean: We’re taking in more than our minds were ever built to handle and then wonder why we feel overwhelmed. At this point, is it even a coincidence? #MentalHealthAwareness #dopaminedetox #overstimulated #mindsetshift #selfawareness

That 34 GB statement is nonsense. Our brain consumes information mostly as text or incomplete imagery that often gets reconstructed from past experiences. If you look at a car, you might remember two or three details, and some of those are blended from previous memories. So even visual memory is pretty minimal. Even if we say 32 GB is like a compressed movie (around 40 hours), that’s not how we actually process it. We’re mostly taking in dialogue and meaning, not storing full visual detail, just small bits like faces or key features. 32 GB of plain text is massive. It’s roughly 50,000–65,000 novels, or about 5.4 billion words. At 1,000 words a day, that’s over 14,000 years of writing. Even if you look at it as consumption instead of writing, it still comes out to well over a century of nonstop reading at very high levels, and for normal use it’s hundreds to over a thousand years worth of text.

Well, the pace of the new information can feel overwhelming, and even stir some anxiety, it also is creating a unique opportunity. We’re able to question assumptions, refine our perspectives, and gain a clear, more nuanced understanding of the world in many ways, this feels like a moment of deeper awareness rather than just uncertainty.

Doesn’t mean people are retaining it. Sometimes tooo much information isn’t good. There needs to be a balance.

We did look at things and listen to things all day throughout history. in that sense we consume the same quantity of information. Something that is different is that we are rarely bored for days or hours because of lack of novelty.

I always think back on something I heard about newspapers. How when people read newspapers for their news, they consumed the information and then had all day or week to reflect on it without outside opinions or other people’s thoughts. Another bad thing we have with today’s news and media exposure is the comment’s section…
