I get so much feedback from parents about how their child is feeling too challenged by the content at school, and I’m like yes, they should feel challenged, because that’s how they’re going to start figuring things out. I can’t just put everything in front of them. I tell them it’s ok to be challenged and I support them to handle it, but I won’t do the thinking for them.

Do you think kids should be sorted into classrooms by ability, rather than by age?

Wow. My mom used to tell me “I’d rather you get a hard C than an easy A. At least with the hard C we can say you tried.”

My son Sebastian is 4. Before he was 2 he could read , count as high as you want him too , memorized every single country in the word map by shape , memorized every flag , .. he now does grade 5/6 math, reads at grade 5 level . He was tested and iq is 145 , highly gifted . The public school system ( Northumberland / Quinte ) in Ontario is so discouraging. We attempted to enrol my son into JK , he was there one day . I was told they can’t help him . He would disrupt the other children and the kids who need to learn. I am at a total loss .

As a fellow education professional, I agree with your response to this 100%!! The expectations have drastically decreased even over the past 10 years.

Super high support? As an Ontario teacher I’d argue that’s not true.

I asked the school to hold my son back because he hasn't shown them he learned anything this year and they told me it wasn't going to happen because the province of Ontario wouldn't be willing to pay for an extra year of schooling for my child. even though they clearly need to repeat the grade because they did show they learned ANYTHING this school year. IMO, school is pointless now. Why even make our kids go if they aren't learning anything and it doesn't even matter whether they do or not?

My son didn’t even have a date that assignments were due, they could pass them in at the end of the year and not lose any points! How is this making them accountable and ready for the real world! It’s terrible

I had the opposite problem. They tested my son and told me he was a genius. Then they never challenged him. He was bored and when he was younger he would chatter away because he was done with his work. They never gave him homework. He was kind of a Sheldon without curiosity except in computers

Where’s the discipline? Their bad behaviour goes unchecked too. It impacts those trying to do good. I’ve tried so many times to chat with their teacher to help and many teachers don’t want to help me help. It’s documented. As a parent I’m trying, I’m alone though.

“False sense of accomplishment” is the PERFECT way of putting it!! When things get hard, they aren’t equipped with the tools to get through it and understand that learning happens when things are tough!

one thing that upset me , my son never learned cursive. signing his name was a challenge and if something is written in cursive it's hard to decipher. why would they stop this teaching?

But as a teacher myself, I think you need to include the fact that majority of us see how wrong this is, how we are setting our students up for failure- and that failure will hit hard because we never taught them how to fail at an early age since "everyone passes"
