@melissa_monday: I passed this interesting object tody and didn’t realize I was looking at the last piece of a forgotten roadside motel. That giant white horse isn’t random. It used to sit outside the old White Horse Motel & Restaurant in Carthage, NC. This was a stop for travelers back when road trips looked a lot different than they do now. Built sometime around the early 1930s, this place served people passing through long before interstates took over. Back then, spots like this were everything — a hot meal, a place to sleep, maybe a quick reset before getting back on the road. And the horse? That actually meant something. Historically, “White Horse” was a common name for inns and travel stops going all the way back to Europe. Horses symbolized travel, movement, strength, and a safe place to rest. A white horse in particular often represented guidance, protection, and a trustworthy stop along the journey. Though they sometimes also meant nobility and status. Regardless, they were popular in those times. Raised high so drivers could see it from far away, it worked like a billboard before billboards existed. In 1973, the motel shut down as traffic moved elsewhere… and like a lot of small roadside places, it was left behind, frozen in time. I didn’t realize the motel was a part of the sign and wished I would have taken video of it too. I was too busy looking at the horse, but I did rob some photos of the motel from the internet. Kinda wild to think something so random is actually the last trace of a whole place full of people, stories, and moments that just… disappeared over time. #vintage #History #america #travel #fyp

This is the White Horse Restaurant and motel in Carthage, NC. This was my Uncle Tommy Richardson’s. I’m not quite sure when he opened the restaurant but he ran it in the mid 60’s when I was a little girl. He bought the White Horse from Hyland Hills golf course over between Vass my hometown and Southern Pines in the early 70’s. He had this sign made to fit the horse in and of course to draw attention and boy did it in the day. He built the motel in the early to mid 70’s. It has been in operation on into the 2000’s I think. I’ve been moved from the area for many years. I’m still in close contact with my cousin. It is still in their family. I think it is now a Mexican restaurant. It was a busy place back in the day. Everyone loved to come and chat with each other and eat good diner food. Those were the simpler times we lived in. Oh how I miss those times. Robin Atkins
