@sheisapaigeturner: The mental load matters and there is a reason why women are continually talking about it. It hasn’t impact on almost all parts of our life, and it can be exhausting carrying it. #mentalload #mentalloadofmotherhood #marriage #swimlessons #momlife
I get told all the time “they need to learn things don’t always go their way.” Yes, but let’s not do that during a thing I paid to do… I planned this to be easy and not frustrating for me…. Why are we making it frustrating for meeeee??

The mental load is what makes things go smoothly. What makes it feel easy. What makes it feel like no big deal.

What IS IT with activity registrations opening at midnight?? 5 AM?? Like why??? Are we trying to make it the MOST difficult it can be?!

I saw someone say what’s exhausting is the planning of all possible outcomes for everything all of the time.

I feel all of this at the core. As a Mom frustrated with my teenagers just this morning about preparing for their day and things not going right because they didn't look ahead, I can give some insight on things I wish I had done differently. I highly recommend taking the time while they are little to teach them how to think and plan for their own activities. Give them the mental load.Have them read the schedule, and pack their bag and then you come along and check it. Do not give them the answer if they miss something, just let them know they missed something and let them sit there and figure it out. You have so much more control over this when they are little. I have three teenagers and it gets so much worse when they are all running in different directions and coaches change schedules constantly. Had your children packed their own bags they would have known what they were supposed to wear on their own. Do your best to remove yourself and your husband from this process. You will be much more exhausted in a few years and the consequences are much bigger when they're older and they get benched for being late or not having the right equipment with them. I speak from experience.

I can hear you pausing to explain/ justify even providing or paying for swimming lessons at all. I can hear how you comparison shopped. I can hear how you made decisions about cost benefit for your whole family’s master schedule. I can hear how you know your children and what will make them comfortable. I can hear how you understand how contextual events, like recent illness, can affect the size or timing of a meltdown. I can hear you knowing which hand-me-downs are missed or loved or envied or continually shared. I can hear you having compassion for everyone in your family. Your grip on your horses is Herculean.

I feel like a pendulum swinging constantly between extremes of “I’ll just do it” and “he can help ffs” bc the mental load is always mine and and when he shares it that means accepting that something won’t be “right.” And I beat myself up for that lack of rightness and swing back to just doing it myself. When you don’t share the same standard of managing the details it is hard to share the mental load.

Oof and in and indoor pool? That’s already such an overstimulating environment. Virtual hugs.

Swim school owner and mom of four. We love Bumkins Wet bags every kid can get their own print that way their stuff can be separated more easily for situations like this. What an amazing amount of effort you are putting in to make sure these kids are strong swimmers and safe around water❤️you’re doing a great job

I saw a professional organizer on here today who uses mesh packing cubes in different colors for each kid for swimsuits and sports uniforms or accessories. You can even throw them in the wash.

I would have an easier time winning the lottery than getting swim lessons for multiple children on the same day around the same time. I am amazed I know how to swim, lord knows my parents wouldn’t have put up with this.

I would have cried too cuz it's a lot of effort and for it to still go wrong, yeah I'd have just been mad at the fact it happened. its no one's fault but like c'mon, that sucks. I'm sorry that happened and you are doing a great job

To be fair, as a 35 year old I would also be pretty upset if I didn’t have the bathing suit I was mentally prepared for.

I babysat my brother’s 3 boys for 3 days by myself for the first time last year. The swim lessons broke me. I could handle nearly everything else but the swim lessons and the lessons I learned from getting them there and getting them through it had me in tears by the end of the night. I admire those who do so much more than one night of swim lessons a year.

This one time my 4 year old didn’t want to go to swim. So she took the swim suit out of the swim bag and put everything else back the way it was and zipped it back up like nothing happened.

YES, that one-two punch of carrying the mental load, and then the emotional load when, despite all the effort we’ve put into planning, things still don’t go as planned. It is exhausting. Moms are exhausted.

I don know if you’ve investigated this at all, but I’ve taught lessons for 15 years and occasionally for a bigger family I’ve gone straight to the family’s house and taught them in their own pool in my off hours for like fifty bucks a lesson. They might be able to make that work if you talk to the teacher!

If you have a pool, hire a private instructor. I had someone who would come to our house when my son was young because he hated the lessons at the pool. Best money I ever spent! He learned much more quickly and I didn’t have to pack everything and go to the pool and worry about timing and signing up and all that drama.

Love this vulnerability ❤️sometimes as a type a person/mom I feel like I would take blame in a situation like this because I could’ve done things more perfectly labeled this done this etc. When it really just comes to down to being a bad mistake. I struggle with taking that out on my husband. How do you not get mad at your husband in the situation? Is it because he picks up a slack so much and other areas?
