@lforsberg: Is the sports grind worth it? …. Yes. Here is why: 95 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs played competitive sports. Not 50. Not 60. 95. 94 percent of women in C-suite executive positions were former athletes. And the data shows one more thing that stopped me cold. The longer someone stayed in sport, the more years they competed, the more likely they were to end up in a leadership position. Read that again. The data is telling you is something most athletes never fully grasp until it is too late. The sport was never just the sport. Every early morning when nobody else was awake. Every loss you had to sit with and come back from. Every moment you had to dig deeper than you thought you could. Every teammate you had to trust. Every time you had to lead when you did not feel ready. You were not just becoming a better athlete. You were building the exact skill set that runs the top one percent of business leaders in the world. Resilience. Coachability. Performance under pressure. The ability to lose and not quit. The ability to put the team before yourself and still find a way to win. These are not soft skills. These are the most valuable skills on the planet right now. The problem is most athletes leave sport and never connect the dots. They leave the discipline on the field. They leave the competitive drive in the locker room. They leave the coachability behind because nobody is coaching them anymore. And then they wonder why the business world feels harder than it should. You already did the hardest part. You spent years building the foundation that most people are trying to develop in a weekend workshop. The question is not whether sport made you better. The data already answered that. The question is are you using everything it built in you? Save this if you played sport. Send it to someone who needs to hear it. #athlete #leadership #entrepreneur #sports businesscoach growyourbusiness

I pay for my boys to go to a private school and play basketball - not because I think they are going to the NBA - but because competitive sports replicates real life: rejection, unfair, duplicity of poor coaching and great coaching, crappy teammates and great supportive teammates, takes time to develop skills, role models. Hard work that doesn’t pay off - smart training that does, discipline and learning the importance of consistency….so much.

I did it to keep my kids active, to socialize, to learn to be a team player and to keep them out of trouble. The rewards are worth the time and effort! Friends made for life!! 🥰

I think sports are great for kids and adults but I also think that it doesn't promote a healthy family if sports are over done.

Correlation is not causation. While I do agree with the general premise here - your child can develop associated skills without travel leagues. School/local sports leagues are a great compromise to not sacrifice the money and time that is required of travel ball. These sacrifices have a real opportunity cost. It might still be best for some families and children, though.
