“Be interesting, be different” sounds nice until you realise most of what’s being pushed as “different” is just another recycled aesthetic. Slapping something edgy on a wall doesn’t make it meaningful, and liking something just because it “looks cool” isn’t depth it’s just preference. Which is fine… until it gets framed as individuality. You can’t manufacture originality on demand. The moment “being interesting” becomes a rule, it stops being interesting. Maybe instead of nudging everyone toward the same version of ‘quirky,’ we let people just like what they like without pretending it’s something more. Real individuality doesn’t come from aesthetics anyway, it comes from lived experience, context, and choices that aren’t made for an audience. Stop forcing the performance of being different…

Idk you talked a lot about not having the same home style as everyone else, but everything you provided examples of is basically the “chronically online influencer house” stuff. Who are we to judge what just brings people joy?

I hate generic art, maybe it’s because I’m an artist, but it’s so easy to be personal with art. I’ve framed not only my art but also my friends’ art, pieces of fabric, things I have been collecting in travels like postcards, flyers, a menu of one of my favorite restaurants in Munich, the New Yorker from the week I went to New York… also personal things like the fishermen card of my late father-in-law or an envelope that the factory where my great grandfather worked use to pay them with his name and date that I found in a drawer on my late dad’s desk. I mean, even junk can be nicely framed and look 100% better than that generic art. And I love when people come home and ask me about my things and I can say I did this or my friend painted this for me or I found this in a little shop in a non crowded street in Venice, or whatever.

The exhausting idea of following the trends. The exhausting idea of being told the trends you follow are annoying and now you can’t follow them. rule of thumb if it brings you joy chop the pillow. Get the slated wall. Paint it grey.
