@drmollysays: Meet Nola! Seriously such a cutie patootie wittle frenchie girl. Today she got spayed but we also did a procedure to correct her stenotic nares. This is one of a few procedures that are performed to correct anatomical abnormalities associated with a condition called BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome). Most of the abnormalities associated with BOAS have to be found with a patient under anesthesia. For Nola we planned to fix her nostrils while she was under for her spay and evaluate her airway under anesthesia. In these cases if more abnormalities like elongated soft palette are found the next recommendation is airway surgery to correct those findings. If we find them and we only ever fix the nostrils we’re not addressing the whole problem! A surgical laser was used to remove a wedge of both her outer nostril and deeper tissues. It is a straightforward procedure that most GP veterinarians can perform. But remember more is needed if patients have more airway abnormalities consistent with BOAS. Has your brachycephalic dog had this procedure done? #frenchie #frenchbulldog #veterinary Nola did great and now has notable nostrils “for the first time in forever”.
