VNL. :
April 19 was my birthday, and I asked my parents if I could get braces. They kept saying they didn’t have money and told me that if I wanted braces, I should work for them myself. I understood their situation, so I didn’t argue.
But a few weeks later, my mom told me they were going to buy my brother a new phone. I felt jealous, but I didn’t let that jealousy turn into hatred toward my brother, even though it feels like he’s being favored by my parents.
Today, I wanted to change something about myself. Every morning, I wake up early and do my chores. Then my mother called me to get water outside. I asked, How about my brother? He’s just playing on the computer. Can’t you let him do it instead? They suddenly yelled at me and said, Why are you counting all the chores you’ve done?
I wasn’t counting my chores. I just wanted things to feel fair between us.
Last month, I helped my cousin carry hollow blocks for work. When we got paid, I wanted to give the money to my cousin so he could go out and enjoy himself, but my parents took my money and said they would keep it safe for me. A few days later, I asked for it back, but they told me, You never saved any money. What are you talking about?
