Dance Elements (Body, Action, Space,
Time, Energy)
Dance - is a meaningful form of artistic expression that allows people to communicate ideas, feelings, and
stories through movement. Every dance is made clearer and more interesting by using the five basic dance
elements: body, action, space, time, and energy. Understanding these elements helps pupils move with purpose
and confidence.
The Body element refers to the different parts of the body we use when we dance. We may move our arms, legs,
head, hands, or even our whole body. Being aware of our body parts helps us move safely and correctly,
especially when dancing with others.
Action - describes what movement we perform. These actions can include walking, jumping, bending,
stretching, turning, or clapping. Different actions help show different ideas and emotions, making the dance
more expressive.
Space - tells us where we move. We can move forward, backward, sideways, or stay in one place. We also learn
to use high and low levels and to be aware of the space around us and other dancers. This helps us avoid
bumping into others and shows respect for shared space.
Time - refers to the speed and rhythm of our movements. We may move fast or slow, follow a steady beat, or
pause at certain moments. Time helps make movements exciting and organized, especially when dancing with
music.
Energy - shows how we move. Movements can be strong or soft, light or heavy, smooth or sharp. Energy allows
us to show emotions such as happiness, calmness, or excitement through dance.
When pupils work together in group dances, they learn social awareness by listening to one another, taking
turns, encouraging classmates, and respecting different abilities. Using the dance elements helps pupils express
themselves clearly while building confidence, cooperation, and respect for others.
