I don’t understand why one person should have to pay more than the other, why should someone be penalised for doing better at their job or having a better job etc, I get sometimes it can’t be helped but still think it’s weird, bills that involve both of you should be 50/50 and anything extra can be split differently

We have one account, all our money, OUR money goes in there, the bills go out, then we spend the rest as we want

This is a silly question but I wanna ask it anyway. Do you have any guilt doing this? My partner earns more than I do and is MORE than WILLING to put in more money and it doesn’t bother him. Me on the other hand, I feel so uncomfortable about it. Like I’m getting ‘let off’ almost? I don’t know how to move past that? I’ve just always thought it should all be halved because we’re both ‘in it together’ and that’s fair? - I can’t get past feeling ‘guilty’ about doing this, even when I know there is no reason as again he offered to pay more without me ever having to mention it.

As far as im concerned, its the households money. Therefor, all goes in one pot, after bills etc, what ever is left get split equally between me and my wife. So we both have exactly the same spending money for the week to do what ever we want with. She shouldnt have less because I have a better job.

Completely agree with this. Mine and my partner are going to do it this way because we both have wants and want to be spontaneous with money so a joint account wouldn’t work because we’d feel bad for “treating ourselves” but if all bills are paid savings etc then we have “us” money and money just for us as individuals then it works better for us.

My husband and I do this method. 50/50 we were left struggling cos all my money would pretty much go on bills then I'd be asking him for money for food, fuel etc. So I said let's do it % way and it's worked much better for us.

Completely agree. For me it makes sense, why should my partner only have, say, £800 a month after bills whereas I could have north of double that. They should not have to find ways to save money to treat themselves, as an example, if I could easily go and buy what I want. A split percentage of bills based on earnings is fair 🤷🏼♂️

this is how we have done it for 16 yrs, he earns a lot more than me so pays the majority, however i do more housework/child stuff. not for everyone but its worked for us. I have my money for my bits and his for his. days out we share the costs.

This is all well and good. But when your wages are massively different it doesn’t make sense. I’m on 6k a month and my partner makes £700 a month part time due to kids.

we tend to do different splits for different expenses. rent and other living bills are 50/50, fun is more like 65/35 or so, and then we pay for our own cars and other stuff. as otherwise it can come across as more "their" space than "our" space

You’ve made a commitment to live together but you’re drawing up spreadsheets to see who pays what? Why not either have a “House Account” into which you both transfer a set amount each month to cover bills and maintenance, or just have a joint account and have everything go in and come out of there? I earn significantly more than my partner but everything I earn is paid into a joint account out of which all bills are paid and everything in there is as much hers as mine.

As someone who earns more and no children. I don’t agree that this formula is for everyone. My BF has slightly lower income than me and a child to a previous relationship. He pays child maintenance and for most things for his son. I do help a little but ultimately my income is my own. We split the household bills 50/50 and our income after that is our own. I do tend to pay for most of our activities as I have the means to, but it’s discretionary.

Did this for years, but then we changed to this. You agree on an individual take, say 500 each. Then everything left goes into overheads and then savings. No arguments on money anymore, same financial goals.

There has been much discussion regarding the division of expenses, with the general consensus in the comments being that the higher earner should contribute more, which is widely accepted. Therefore, I would like to inquire if you believe that in the event of a separation or breakup, all assets should be divided, for instance, 60/40, given that the higher earner has contributed more, or if a 50/50 split would be more appropriate?

my partners wage varies from 2000 to 6000 being self employed. so its so much easier saying my wage pays the bills and his money is for OUR spending. throw all the money into a joint account

Me and my bf split rent 60/40 because he makes more and works 5 days a week when I work 4 everything else shared is split 50/50 and the extra day I have off I use to do house work I do 90% of the house work and bill management so he can’t have time off to himself… sometimes I feel like I carry more mental load, but I never mind or complain, I like doing the “wifely” duties for him while also keeping up on a majority of the bills the only thing he pays more for is rent because he does make 60% of our income and I would not be able to afford living with him if it was 50/50 so I think I force myself to take on pretty much everything else. I’ve never once felt it was unfair though…
