Niasse, or Niasse, brings a very different energy. Covered in dark, gorilla-like hair and moving with two sticks, it’s more playful but also a bit intimidating—often chasing or startling people, especially children. These here are called Paixtles from Tuxpan, Jalisco. I was on a deep dive of my ancestry DNA results. I always knew we had some African ancestry and sure enough results said 10% Senegal. Then I looked up Senegal and was jaw dropped to see the influence they had in Mexico. My family comes from Jiquilpan where many African slaves settled and mixed with our community. Its amazing to see how generations later we still have similar traditions.
