Born in 1890 in what was then French Indochina, he grew up under colonial rule and later traveled widely across Europe and the United States, where he encountered political ideas such as socialism and nationalism that shaped his worldview. He became a committed communist and in 1930 helped found the Indochinese Communist Party, aiming to combine revolutionary communism with Vietnamese independence. During World War II, he led the Viet Minh resistance against Japanese occupation, and in 1945 he declared Vietnam’s independence, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. When France attempted to regain control, conflict broke out, eventually leading to a Vietnamese victory in 1954. During the Vietnam War, he served as the symbolic leader of North Vietnam’s struggle against South Vietnam and its allies, including the United States.
