Local dog abuse and torture case has sentencing today in Watonwan County. When this case first became public, many of the details released came from Laura herself. The picture painted was that these were simply dogs that people had rehomed to her. That wasn’t the reality. They were dogs that had already been failed by humans once and had been given another chance. They were entrusted to someone who knew better and was supposed to do better. That is perhaps the hardest part for many of us to process. Laura wasn’t an unknown person operating in secret. She was established in the rescue community. She was the director of a well-known rescue. She worked in animal control. She performed behavioral assessments for dogs. She was trusted. Respected. Valued. People sought out her opinions. Organizations trusted her with animals. Rescues partnered with her. Then something changed. What was discovered wasn’t simply a rescue struggling with too many animals or not enough supplies. She had so many things for the dogs that were completely untouched. As she was actively killing animals she would still go and pull another and bring them to her home to die. Her lies were so intricate that she created fake people for her rescue board. Fake fosters. Fake adopters. And there was truly no one watching over her because they weren’t real. This is the type of situation rescuers walk into and carry with them forever. The type of case that leaves experienced animal welfare workers scarred…truly scarred. The type of scene we expect to find when walking in to help dogs harmed by a stranger, not someone we knew…not dogs we thought we saved. I feel that it’s important to get this information out as if sentencing goes the way that the plea deal is worded Laura will be able to legally own animals again after a probationary time… so people need to be aware so that they can avoid making the most horrendous mistake of trusting her. This is My witness statement post Sentencing… this is what she got… 12 months on the felony, 90 days on the misdemeanor. All stayed, meaning she doesn't have to serve it as long as she follows all the rules. 2 years probation, 150 hrs community service, $500 fine… after probation she can own animals again #dog #sentencing #court #victim #rescue
