@katymoorehair: Everyone wanted the fast money era until it required actual skill, consistency, and client care This industry swung hard into aesthetics over fundamentals and now we’re seeing the gap… Because when things slow down the stylists who built relationships, systems, and real experience are the ones who stay booked Not the ones who only built a highlight reel I’m not saying social media isn’t powerful I’m saying it’s not the foundation hairstylist business tips how to build a hair clientele hairstylist reality check beauty industry truth how to retain clients hairstylist salon business advice hair stylist mistakes luxury client experience hair #hairstylistlife #salonbusiness #beautyindustry #haireducation #behindthechair
I literally just watched a TikTok and highlighted my own hair and it looks better than the professional. I was going to for the last 15 years. And I just saved $280 plus tip.

feel that many salons take advantage of assistants and create an environment that can feel discouraging. With the current economy, many people need two jobs just to make ends meet, so assisting full-time is simply not financially realistic for a lot of new stylists.”

I did not assist for two years for these girls straight out of school to expect to make the same as me when I’m over 8 years in. I’m not even comfortable yet 😩 I’ve still got growing to do and it’ll never stop. You can’t just skip 8 years 👀

Being an assistant for almost 2 years was equally the worst time in my life and my best. But I was able to be booth rent after 6 months, on my own for 4 years, and now in my suite for 6 years.

Been licensed since 2007. The amount of clients I gain just from being able to do a killer cut is insane. Sooooo many corrective cuts. You can't "specialize" in blonding & extensions fresh out of school with 0 salon time under your belt. Especially when you want to charge premium pricing for it. It's wild out here.

i’ve been an assistant for 2 years and have been mentored by a 30 year veteran hairstylist. learning the grind is a real thing. as a newer stylist i take everything i’m offered, work evenings/weekends, etc. i’m so grateful i was humbled and taught how to work hard in this industry so early in my career!!

I’m on year 1.5 of being an assistant and I still love it because I can do stuff on clients without the pressure and I learn sooo much.

I’m an assistant that’s part time behind the chair and I agree, I would much rather take my time learning before being behind the chair giving subpar service.

I think the success of any hairstylist really depends on the individual itself. I never felt like it was necessary to be an assistant. There’s tons of classes and courses you can take. Plus networking it itself, if you can build a solid clientele and have great solid relationships, you got this! I personally, would not ever work for free.

I’m a baby stylist in a small town. Assisting isn’t a thing around here so I’m fresh out of school paying booth rent… I think mindset plays a huge role too. I didn’t come out of school expecting to make bank. I know I still have a ton to learn and grow but I’m so thankful for the other stylists in my salon for pouring into me and teaching me! They want me to succeed and are teaching me so much whether it be about hair or business! Also- calling yourself a “specialist” straight out of school is a huge ICK and I will not be participating in that😅😂

As a 28 yr behind the chair stylist - I don't understand how they just jumped from school to suite. Having the support and learning was so vital to the beginning of my career

Being truly educated in this industry is so important. It takes time and investment and skill. Not all will succeed in this industry. Especially when they don’t take it serious.

Literallllyyyyyy! I made $6.75, worked 60+ hours a week, i passed out business cards at the grocery store offering free services just to get people in the door! It’s wild to watch how new stylists expect to be on the floor in 5 months with a full clientele.

I agree 100% I think everyone should assist for a year at least. But I also think that there needs to be a shift in the cosmetology program as a whole, having to go to 1500(or whatever your state requires) to learn almost nothing we are going to be able to use in the real world is a serious problem, we are not angry enough. Working for free and having to learn nails and skin.. for what? Ugh

as a precious apprentice who just changed salons behind the chair, i’m blocking off time my booked schedule to learn the new color line and assist the top stylist at my new place. I can’t be successful if i just guess

I’m struggling so hard with this career. I was told by my moms old stylist to start at ulta because it will help build my clientele and I will learn a lot but I’m not building shit. I’m also not being taught shit. I feel very alone with no support. I have been heavily debating on just completing taking a step back and go be and apprentice to really learn because I honestly don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve wanted to do this job since I was super little and I feel like I’m loosing the love for it by not knowing anything.

As a great clips stylist since 2020 we have only been gaining more and more clients. So many people come from the full service life and realize a $100 haircut is the same as a $26 haircut. There’s also a lot of stylist that used to be full service working with me now bc they don’t have to stress about overhead and all that other fun stuff

Not everyone has to apprentice, “building your brand” comes in many forms. For some that IS an apprenticeship, and for others that is on social media and just continued education classes. Both are TOTALLY okay. I opened a salon right out of school & invited a seasoned stylist of 15+ years to join me. She held me back. I learned nothing from her but taught her so much about toning, foil placement, and even advertising online. We parted ways and my salon has been thriving since day 1. Solely based off how I branded myself in school and online. Also, it varies depending on your area. LA is going to look different than a rural area. We all have the same destination, but there are MANY ways to get there! ❤️
