I was looking forward to your opinion after reading the book, exactly as i expected, I knew you’d like it. I’m not quite sure if you saw my comment about the book you recommended to me so I’ll leave it here again. I finished reading your recommended book. I found “A Month in the Country” quietly enchanting, especially the subtle, tender romance that gently unfolds amid the peaceful countryside. It’s a book of gentle surprises, thank you for the recommendation! Btw I noticed you followed me back, I’m truly flattered and honored🩵

I read Notes from Underground recently, and it completely raised the bar for me when it comes to portraying a truly haunted mind. Ever since getting into the Russian classics, I’ve struggled to find books that match that same psychological depth and intensity. I’m curious—have you come across any non-Russian novels that capture that feeling as well as Dostoevsky does?

honestly while i ofcourse agree with the fact that the underground man is a horrible horrible man, my first instinct while reading it was to feel empathy towards him. i felt though as if it was a total understanding of the deepest thoughts of human beings. It is one of my favorite books of all time so I made my family read it and I realise not everybody feels the same way about him especially in the beginning so I’d say some people definitely have more similarities to him than others, even though I’d like to think of myself as quite a fun and empthatic person. For me the feelings he describes in the first part were very important when I read it because I was very young and I knew I sometimes felt that way but I didn’t know if anybody ever did cause these were feelings nobody ever talked about. But I think the themes of existentialism in the book are a key part to it cause in my experience those feelings (like enjoying humiliation and all) get bigger when you are not working towards anything in life and definitely get smaller when you are not just watching life but are part of it. Orhan pamuk has a great quote on this book however i can’t find the english version. Also the writing is amazing and that keeps you going as well

I have to disagree with the underground man being an abhorrent character and also a narcissist. I feel like that totally misrepresents the underground man. I myself felt empathetic towards him instead of distasteful because he is so overly conscious to the point he gets stuck in his own thoughts. He is self destructive and lonely due to him being overly aware and observant of people and society. This all together just makes him resent everything around him including himself. Also he is more close to being a realist then narcissist since narcissist tend to love and think highly of themselves while underground man is totally oppsite!

Hello, I really want to start reading classics but I don’t know where to start from and I fear that when I do start I wouldn’t be able to comprehend what is the message the author insinuates through the story which the core beauty of classics. Any tips, perhaps?
