My wife and I stumbled into a spot like this in Kappabashi a few weeks ago. Guy served a karaage lunch that was out of this world. Couldn’t believe the place was empty. We had a great conversation and learned that he helped open several Japanese restaurants in the states in the 80’s and had cooked for people like Joe Montana and Madonna. One of the best experiences we had in Japan.
