@dr.sherrie: In low effort families, gift giving becomes another place where they outsource effort to you. They don’t think about what you like, don’t pay attention throughout the year, and don’t take initiative. Instead, they ask you what to buy, wait for you to send the exact link, and call that thoughtfulness. It’s not that they don’t know how to be creative. It’s that they’re not willing to put in the effort to know you well enough to try. The gift ends up being accurate, but the connection behind it is missing. 💔🎁 What to Do About It: Stop doing the emotional labor for them. You don’t have to curate your own gifts to make them look thoughtful. If you choose to respond, keep it general instead of specific, or don’t engage at all. Let their level of effort stand on its own. Real care comes from paying attention, not from following instructions. 🌱💛✨ In low effort families, gift giving becomes another place where they outsource effort to you. What about when they pester you for gift ideas so you tell them the exact thing and then they don’t get it. They get something similar or cheaper version.

My mom has done this every Christmas and birthday . She’ll ask me what I want or hand me money and honestly it makes me sad that she doesn’t know me or what I like or care to try it just makes me feel alone …

I am no contact with most of my family and their weird energies don’t impact my daily life anymore. But I hold a lot of resentment for not being taught how to do things properly. Out in the world, I have found out that I was taught selfish and distasteful things from my family that I didn’t even know were wrong until adulthood. I’m almost forty and still learning things all of the time that I do/handle incorrectly. And it makes me want to hide.

My mom had me order all my kids presents and ship them to her house so she could wrap them and give them.

My mom does this and I HATE it. I’d rather get nothing at all.

OMG I’ve never heard this articulated! Word for word this was every Christmas. It became so exhausting (before going NC) I simply said we didn’t want anything.

My parents just ask me for an Amazon list. It’s so soulless and I barely add anything on it anymore because it’s not enjoyable or connecting to receive those gifts. Meanwhile I take time, attention and money to buy gifts for everyone in my life and get them things that are meaningful or very useful.

My husbands family asks for gift lists and I love it… coming from a family that never asked me what I wanted and didn’t know me enough to give good gifts

Yep! I actually bought, paid for and wrapped gifts for my kids from my mother. My in laws would always complain about what my kids wanted and would just get them something else that was cheap and thoughtless. We have always made sure our kids felt seen and filled in all the gaps and still do as they are adults. It’s really sad they never had anyone decent on either side 🥺

it's so exhausting. I will send a wishlist then get critiqued about certain things, and sent a link to something similar thats somehow "better" than what was on my list ( I usually dont care what exact item it is but it makes it feel like there's always SOMETHING to say). Or just hounded with texts and pictures over multiple days or weeks to the point that I'm so deflated and not excited about whatever the holiday is. I also just feel like if they spent time getting to know my kids better.. maybe they'd know what to buy.
and also, when they barely make an effort to see or talk to us honestly I feel like screw a gift from you, especially if it's this much work!

My MIL constantly gives me Silver or white gold Jewelry as gifts, if she got to know me she would know I like gold. She also doesn’t observe that I hardly wear jewelry…

I have to tell my parents what my kids like because to be honest they dont even care to really know my kids and they stopped giving me gifts when I was like 21 and these last few years ive just stopped even trying with them

Yes! I was so glad when they finally just started sending a check by mail. I could never put my finger on why the yearly struggle with birthdays and Christmas got under my skin so much. But the comment that is becomes “transactional and not relational” really nails it

I actually made a Amazon list for people to use to make it easier. They won’t use it. They want me to send the individual suggestions

Everyone knows I love to read and I’ve said a million times I’ll read anything. I never get a book because ‘they don’t know what I like and I’m hard to buy for’
