@malisson.juno: Powerful men used Fashion to express their influence — and Louis XIV of France was no different. Known as ‘Le Roi Soleil’ 🌞⚜️ (‘The Sun King’), he believed he was at the center of a lustrous, God-given legacy. From a young age, King Louis XIV understood art & fashion as vehicles of political dominance. He himself was a prolific dancer, performing in royal halls as Apollo, the radiant God of the Sun. The ornate costumes and theatrics associated with Louis XIV was not only to intended to entertain his courts, but also to establish his extensive grip on Europe. Louis XIV applied his artistic appreciation to his golden-fisted reign, which included extravagant court-commissioned dances, artworks & writings, as well as the construction of the lustrous Palace of Versailles. As the protector and patron of many great creatives, he fostered a vision of beauty which he imposed onto the national landscape. Much of his ‘Grand Siècle’ (‘Great Century’) splendor still dominates French arts & culture to this day. Fun Fact: Taylor Swift is a distant descendant of Louis XIV, as the “8th cousin 11 removed” according to MyHeritage. Perhaps that explains much of her legacy ✍️🎶 ☝️With real historical figures, especially ones that exercise blatant authoritarianism in this case, it is important to not blindly romanticize their lives. Critical literacy lies in the ability to awe and take holistic interest in topics in the past, while also acknowledging that they contain flaws that cannot be brushed aside. Among many actions in the name of boasting his absolute empire, Louis XIV brutally expanded France’s colonial influence, persecuted Protestants, and essentially employed the Arts as a propaganda—politicizing cultural capital as an almost-weaponized tool of French dominance. As the Internet, and admittedly this <20sec video, struggles to embody the fullness of historical nuance, we must remember that a plurality of fractured perspectives exists at the same time. I heard that his mother used to dress him up in dresses and treated him like a daughter because he was technically the second son. He was never supposed to inherit the throne.

Have you heard of his brother Philippe? He was an openly flamboyant and gay man who was tolerated due to his closeness to the king. He would frequently dress in even more flamboyant or extravagant costumes than his king brother, sometimes match costumes with him and occasionally he'd even attend balls fully crossdressed.
