😂 omg it's the same with a girl I know! First things first, we're Spanish so pronunciation is key. This girl, she's Martha and her parents and her pronounce it the English way (mar-thuh), but the vast majority of the people pronounce it like the Spanish way for Marta (MAHR-tah). When she gives her name for situations like this, she won't react until we say "hey, I think they're calling you" and she walks up to the stand with a nasty face while saying "Well, they didn't call MARTHA (mar-thuh) so I wouldn't know if they're talking to me".

As an elementary teacher who teaches phonics for a freaking living, I can confidently say, names FREQUENTLY do not follow phonetic rules. Not to mention that English has as many exceptions to rules as rules.
