...and cue the HR-hating comments section. you'll never know how many times your job has been saved by an HR employee, how many times someone has gone to bat for you, how involved they were in getting you a raise or merit increase, how hard they worked to ensure your bad manager was terminated, that misdeeds were brought to light. It's BS when someone says, "they work for the company, not for you." Most of us work for what's right, and we stand up for that, even when it's unpopular, even when it costs more, even when it cuts into profits. Without HR, everyone would be at the mercy of untrained managers acting like it's the wild west, doing whatever they want without regard to labor laws or professional ethics. I'm not saying we're the most important, we're certainly not, but be careful claiming we're not on your side, or we're the bad guy, because that's far from the truth.

A theory my partner raised the other day - HR shouldn't be a job position within a company but instead a third party company that employers/employees hire for their cases. Just like many unions.

and that is why being in HR is not for everyone. Because being in HR is emotionally and mentally exhausting. HR is just like sales yet there are no incentives. the most unappreciated department, while everyone else is receiving their salary increases or being promoted HR gets left behind most of the time. That is the sad reality

Sorry to say but HR nowadays believes that knows everything and runs everything but after having worked in corpos for more than ten years I find this not to be true. They only appear to hire and fire people and sometimes too much power is given to HR without having real knowledge of the business.

How to enforce unequal pay for equal work and seniority? How to loose talented people because you didn’t pay them enough? Only to hire someone more junior with higher pay in 6 months time ?

HR are not your friend. They are there to protect the business from risk, whatever it takes. 95% of people managed out with HRs say so never take legal action. The remaining 5% they know 3% will drop out of proceedings, 0.5% will settle out of court, 0.5% will lose at court and 1% will win. They calculate risk knowing you can't and won't do anything about it.
