Ms Hillary | Educator • Life • :
Time-out is actually a very effective strategy—it gives a child the space to pause and reflect on their behaviour.
However, simply asking a child to say “sorry” without helping them understand why can limit real learning. It can make apologies feel automatic rather than meaningful.
Instead, after the time-out, you can guide him through a short reflection. Ask questions like: “How do you feel about what happened?” ,“Do you know what you did made me feel?”or “What do you think went wrong?”
Then help him understand the impact of his actions by sharing how it made you (or the other person) feel. This helps him connect his behaviour to real emotions.
When a child begins to recognize that what he did didn’t feel right to him and also affected someone else, he is more likely to come to the decision to apologize on his own. That’s where true accountability starts—from within, not because he was told to say it.
The goal is to raise a child who understands his actions and takes responsibility naturally, not one who simply waits to be told what to say or do or waits for someone to tell him to say sorry before he does it.
This is just my perspective, both as a teacher and a boy mom.
