I use 'just' more in dialogue - (and in real life speech 😅) - is it as harmful when it's the character talking?

Umm I don’t agree with the began to and started to. It really depends on tense. Those sentences are changing from present progressive to past.

For a horror writer, suddenly is like saying "I'm going to shock you now. Ready? Boo!"
Instead, just say boo! 🙈

Good advice, but I don’t agree with “door slammed open.” Doors slam shut, and they fly open

Depends on your style. Some suit minimalist, terse, aloof prose and fit a narrator or speaker with a formalised manner. A slightly stilted tone produces a staccato, repressed rhythm that can be quietly heartbreaking to me. I find formal, concise sentences leave much room for interpretation despite their brevity. The phrases “began to,” “that,” “suddenly” or “just/only/simply,” used well can lend a barren, restrained almost stoic air. There is affect in the plainness and precision.

I will defend my verys, just and thats! "which, ironically, was the very outcome he was trying to avoid." "the box just so happen to be right where it shouldn't be." "truth be told, he'd already said this that very same morning"

I don’t think “felt” is even the most over-used filter word. I’d say saw or thought. Also, with some of these it’s about the balance. Very and really are sometimes necessary to make dialogues sound natural. They creep into drafts precisely because we’re used to using them so much in speech. And walk is one of the blind words like said. if you have your character trudging or shuffling all the time, it will sound odd.

But during dialogues, it's based on the tone and how the character talks because they have their own personality, humor, and voice
