Hi! My Mini Aussie eats treats in low stress situations and refuses in high stress. She is very anxious and we need help with helping her calm down. I do OK but there’s a lot of room for growth and my partner has the worst time with her

I also like to remind owners that reinforcement can be more than what they assume. You dog pulls to get to the hydrant to sniff/mark it? Use it! Dog listens/performs a behavior - Yay let’s go sniff this together!

it took a year or two for my dog to take treats on walks🤣when i needed it for positive reinforcement, we used her favorite high prize treat that she only gets on walks. now she takes anything & will even take it when she’s stressed most of the time🥰

Sometimes it’s also the value of the food. Kibble and liver are two different values.

I have 3 dogs with 3 different motivators: Food, Toys, Praise. The praise one, was definitely the hardest one to figure out.

I have a 3 month old puppy who doesn’t really care about treats. She will eat them if I insist, but otherwise she seems to think there are far more interesting things to shove in her mouth 🤣 I’m sure she will like them more once her adult teeth come in, I just find it hilarious that she’d rather chew on some weeds in the yard than any of the treats I have for her lol

I have a Great Dane that cannot be motivated by food, love, toys, anything when he's out and gets distracted. Not even his favorite, cheese. He's almost 6 and is a pretty good boy, treats at home are good and some places but he will hyper focus and nothing but removing him to break it.

Can you show what it would look like to use sniffing as a motivator? My dog is food motivated but she also LOVES to sniff, and I’d love to be able to use that to my advantage too.

We adopted a hypothyroid dog who is morbidly obese. She loves food but we cannot use it liberally because we have to monitor her calories down to the gram. We do use portions of her meals for training but we have to get creative with rewards. We use belly rubs, celebration runs around the house and sometimes toys.

okay. so I have a dog with food allergies. currently on hydrolyzed and will be for a while longer. he will take kibble as a "treat", but will not eat off of a plate, a bowl, a lick matt, or a snuffle matt. even if you put too much kibble on the floor at one time, he might not eat it. it's only by hand. and some days I just really need to be able to set down his food and do other things while he eats without worrying that he's just going to let the cats eat it for him. this was all pretty much true before he started hydrolyzed, but know i can't even test new foods. sometimes he won't even accept for from my wife because he wants me to be the person feeding him.
