@jakerosmarin: This iceberg is way bigger than it looks 🧊 What you’re seeing above the surface is only about 10% of its total size The other ~90% is hidden below the waterline, which is why icebergs can be so massive and unpredictable We came across this one while sailing through the Scotia Sea on our way to South Georgia Island on @Oceanwide ExpeditionsAtlantic Odyssey 🚢🌊 And seeing it in person really puts its scale into perspective Icebergs like this form when glaciers or ice shelves break apart, sending huge chunks of ice drifting into the ocean From there, they’re carried by currents and wind through the Southern Ocean, sometimes traveling thousands of miles Given the size and location of this iceberg, there’s a good chance it was a fragment of A23a, one of the largest icebergs in the world In recent years, A23a has been drifting through this region, and at one point there were concerns it could collide with South Georgia, which would have had major impacts on the island’s wildlife by disrupting feeding routes for penguins and seals Icebergs can also become grounded when they move into shallower waters This one was likely sitting in water around 400 feet deep, which gives you an idea of just how massive it really was Moments like this are a reminder of how dynamic and powerful the Southern Ocean is And how small you feel out here . . . . . #travelinspiration #travelinspo #iceberg #epicadventure #bucketlistadventures
