@adytum_official: Screen apnea was coined by Linda Stone, a former Microsoft and Apple executive, around 2007. She noticed she held her breath while answering emails and tested about 200 people. 80% showed shallow or suspended breathing while on screens. The only exceptions were people trained in breathing techniques: a former military test pilot, a triathlete, dancers, singers, and a cellist. Stephen Porges, a professor of psychiatry at UNC Chapel Hill and creator of polyvagal theory, explained to the New York Times that screen apnea is a manifestation of the body’s stress response. The focus required by screens triggers shallow breathing and a slowing of heart rate to quiet the body and divert resources to help you focus, similar to a cat freezing before it attacks. Chronic shallow breathing can shift CO2 levels, spike cortisol, trigger fight-or-flight, and contribute to anxiety, brain fog, and fatigue. #anxiety #MentalHealth #SelfCare #nervoussystem #wellness
