this is actually a psychological term called the fundamental attribution error where if someone makes a mistake, we are more likely to attribute that error to their disposition, which in essence collapses their entire being into that mistake. Here, we begin to associate them with their mistake and even identify them with it. On the other end is situational attribution. Here, we understand that just like a mistake you make is usually because of something else, like a bad coffee or a rock in your shoe or a sick relative. All these things make it really difficult to act in character and we are more susceptible to making mistakes. When we adopt a situational approach to attribution, we are able to have more empathy and understanding for other people.
