As an educator, I have so much beef with standardized assessments. They are biased and offer a one-size-fits-all approach! They never take into consideration the disability, learning style, curriculum, socioeconomic status, culture, and it's an inaccurate measure of TRUE potential. I have the same beef with taking our LOs to the neurologist only for them to keep asking them to recall information, draw a clock, and name the president. MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE! As experts, we know that every stage presents differently. We should measure our LOs ability based on the stage. Doing this will allow us to implement strategies to assist our LOs within each stage. It will also help present a clear picture of how the brain is declining, what happens at each stage, and how we can assist our LOs to gain access. We need to dive deep into ADLs, Assistive Technology, their level of functioning, behavior, mobility, and support needs. Observational and functional assessments are more meaningful than cognitive assessments AFTER diagnosis. Pay attention to the data, as it drives the treatment and implementation of strategies. #alz #dementia #care #gertrudejordan #caregiver
