@secondstarsleep: Unsafe setups like sleeping with baby in a chair, on a sofa, or on a bed with various hazards around (like loose blanket, sheets, pillows and a soft mattress) are regularly categorised together with safe bed-sharing when sharing statistics on safety. This can make it look like safe bed-sharing isn’t viable. But that simply isn’t the case. The fact is most parents end up bed-sharing at one point or another even when it wasn’t their plan to do so. The temperament or comfort level of their child might mean they simply will not sleep in their own space and parents end up completely exhausted trying to avoid bed-sharing. Or perhaps you are sitting on a chair or sofa to feed baby in the night and can’t quite stay awake. Whatever the reason, when you feel like bed-sharing is an unsafe practice no matter how you do it, the chances of finding yourself in a truly unsafe situation is heightened. So I implore you, whether you plan to bed-share or not, read information on how it can be done safely so you are prepared should you need to. The basic safety guidelines for bed-sharing - Baby on their back. Firm mattress with no loose bedding, sheets, pillows etc close to baby. Sober and not taking any drugs or medication that could impact your sleep or ability to rouse. Bed-sharing isn’t recommended for premature or low weight little one’s. Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce SIDS risks and even formula feeding families who previously breastfed see a reduced risk. Post 4 months, the risk decreases and any sober adult who is sensitive to baby can bed-share even without breastfeeding. Safe and planned bedsharing is still safer than accidental bedsharing. No swaddle. 👉🏼Check out @Tiffany Belanger for HEAPS of info on safe bed-sharing. 🤷🏼♀️Did/do you bedshare? 🤷🏼♀️Full time/part time/ sometimes? 🤷🏼♀️Did you plan to? #secondstartotherightsleep #bedsharing #bedsharingwithbaby #safesleeptips #parentingtips

swore up and down to the hv and in my NCT class I wouldn't bed share. they gave me the info to do it safely anyway. which turns out to be excellent as my child refused to sleep unless she was touching me! she still sleeps in my bed at 4

My son sleeps in my bed too otherwise he wouldn’t sleep at all. Some nights he even only sleeps when he‘s on me 😩 In theory I know how to bed share safely but he just won’t sleep in that setting. He needs to be super close to me and never sleeps on his back only on the side 😭 I‘m really stressed out about this situation

I was adamant that I would never co-sleep. I did it for the first time when my son was 4 weeks old. We’ve done it on and off since then. It was the only way to get any sleep through the 4 month regression. Now that he’s 6 months, we do it less and less, bed sharing is how my baby learned to fall back to sleep without feeding or rocking. It saved my sanity.

I was adamant I wouldn't bedshare now I'm 3 weeks pp and my son has ended up in bed with me in the early morning because it's the only way I can rest as well. Safe sleep 7 should be encouraged.

My little one sleeps on my chest in the morning for an hour. Blankets folded down, laying in the middle of the bed, propped up with pillows and my elbow on the bed. It’s the best hour sleep I get and I’m so aware she’s there.

currently watching this in bed with my 5 month old beside me. he's been sleeping full time in my bed last couple weeks but has ended up in my bed every night since birthday as he just wants to be close to me and that's ok with me.

I bedshare with my 16 week old. He starts out most nights in his bedside and the first time he wakes, he sleeps in the bed with me. Some nights we sleep face to face and others I move away and sleep “alone” - we have a 210x210cm bed. He has his own duvet (never above his waist) and I never wear mine higher than my waist either, I wear a tight longsleeve instead. I also breastfeed during the night, sleep in C shape and I am a light sleeper. This way he never fully wakes, but breastfeeds semi sleeping. Works great for both of us.

I swore blind I wouldn’t bed share.. I’ve since done it many a time with my twins! Sometimes it’s the only way they’ll fall asleep and then I’ll just transfer them into their next to me. Parenting can be hard, I’m not about to make it even harder for myself by listening to my babies screaming because they’re overtired! 😅😅

I’m almost certain that ALL parents cosleep at some point (either intentionally or accidentally). We’ve all been there, exhausted doing the night feeds and feeling the nodding off. I thankfully made the decision to embrace bed sharing with my first very early on - best decision I made! Had my second almost 2 weeks ago and cosleep with them both (using a next to me for my newborn) and it’s incredible!

Honestly she sleeps so well in her next to me from midnight - 2ish, then I dreamfeed her and transfer her again and she sleeps until 5ish…but will never transfer again 😂 so her 5am feed is a side lying feed and we cosleep, following the SS7, until she’s ready to wake for the day around 7/8. 4 weeks old and started this routine last week when Dad went back to work, so it’s only ever me & her in bed for co sleeping

my HV said she would report me to social services, even though we had a great set up. Was told breastfeeding a newborn in bed would lead to dxxxx, I had to get up get dressed and feed in a chair 😳 I declined HV with the next baby.

You are so right! Used to judge cosleeping so badly because of the narrative surrounding it & swore I’d never do it when pregnant but then had a baby who wouldn’t sleep anywhere but on me. Sent myself insane sitting up with him until I fell asleep breastfeeding one night & woke up 2 hours later (thank god he was fine). Been Co sleeping safely since and LOVE it. Haven’t once felt sleep deprived and cherishing the cuddles x
