thats not lazy, most art schools recommend this method. using references is normal. preferably your own photos ofcourse.
charcoal and graphite both react differently to different types of mediums and paint. id test before using it. if you put the paper up to the window backwards you can trace the lines with the charcoal or soft graphite, this makes less mess and costs less product. other options are transfer paper. but that also can make smudge or mix weirdly with the stuff you use on top.

All these comments are annoying. This method may help anyone who doesn’t have a projector or transfer paper!

gregory barrett artist :
Michelangelo used a similar method to transfer his cartones (sketches) onto the Sistine Ceiling by pinpricking the lines of his drawing and then using a bag of graphite dust to pat the lines through the holes onto the ceiling section. What was left was a dotted line drawing of what he was going to paint for that day. He was so focused on his work that when asked what he wanted for lunch or dinner he would often just sketch bread or fish on a spare piece of paper and let it fall to the floor. He was too engrossed in his work to speak.

use a cheap projector thats what we do in art school for huge canvases works. cuz we have limited time lesson wise so we save time by making the first image smaller then carry it over by projector!:)

What happened to sketching? I’m not disrespecting your painting skills but art is also about drawing, perspective etc. There is nothing wrong with grids! Technology wast available to anyone until recently and folks managed fine

write the alphabet or something recognizable that doesn't repeat on the drawing surface. take a picture. overlay the image u want to draw in an app on ur phone. change the opacity until u can kindof see the alphabet canvas underneath. draw over the corresponding letters that are covered with ur drawing on ur phone

Process is a part of the artwork and every single artist has a different one. What she is doing is one way of transferring image, there are multiple different ones, everyone uses one they like the best for many reason. If she would like to use transfer paper because it would produce a result she likes and desires then she would use it, simple as that. This method is good for people who do not have transfer paper or projector. It’s useful technique.

Or…. Simply use a cheap projector that can be connected to your ipad and project as large as you want without leaving a hard charcoal press on your canvas….

i can feel that you're enjoying the process itself , so don't mind these people telling you to do it in the way that they feel as convenient, cause we all are uniquely different ❤️🩹
