@thenewstepford: College tour season is upon us, and if you’re anything like me, you showed up with a spreadsheet, a tote bag, and entirely too much hope. After going through this process, here are the 3 things I genuinely wish someone had pulled me aside and told me before we hit that first campus: 1. Watch your kid, not the tour guide. Seriously - let the guide do their thing, but keep one eye on your child the whole time. Their face will tell you more than any rehearsed campus speech ever could. Are their eyes lighting up? Are they asking questions on their own? Or do they look like they’re being escorted somewhere against their will? The body language doesn’t lie, and it will save you a lot of time. 2. A college is a match, not a prize. We have to keep reminding ourselves of this one. You are not solving for prestige. You are not solving for what sounds impressive at a dinner party. You are solving for the right fit for YOUR kid - their personality, their interests, their goals. The school that’s right for them is the right school. Full stop. 3. For the love of all things holy, you do not need to buy everything at every merch tent. I know the hoodies are calling your name. I know. But wait until they commit, and THEN go absolutely feral in the campus store. Trust me, it’ll feel so much better. You’ve got this.
