@missclairebenjamin: Handling delivering a bad end of year performance review Delivering a bad end of year performance review is rarely an easy thing to do as a manager especially when you know the person is likely to push back and avoid taking any responsibility. One of the traps many managers fall into is shouldering far too much of the responsibility. This can lead to feelings of resentment and frustration which can come out in defensive reactions like we see in the first part of this video. It’s important to try and avoid being defensive as this will keep you trapped in an unproductive dynamic. Instead create shared responsibility and ownership in the conversation. Even when they push back ask questions to encourage self-reflection and ownership. 💬 What most stood out for you when you watched this interaction play out? Surely if you’ve had a years worth of conversations about this and they still are at this point, it’s too late for them. Or you as the manager should have implemented these management conversation suggestions long before?

Johnny Higgs :
I just had a negative review following a year of no support from my manager, all documented. I had no performance conversations. I had an adhd diagnosis and his response has been to put me on a PIP for executive function, and included points he'd praised me for in my mid-year review. It's destroyed my relationship with him.

Who knows, you have to be able to understand if your performing good or not. While a select few managers are good and listing to that feedback is a great idea, most managers would not no what good performance was. If your not liked your stuffed anyway.

The non manager doesn't appear to be self aware? How do you get them to take more accountability for their performance?

NEVER sign a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). They are not legally enforceable and only end up in your eventual dismissal. It's purely a tool used by management to get rid of you - don't listen to anyone who says otherwise, they're lying. If you must sign something, sign it and add a note saying you received it but don't agree with it. That is all.
