I graduated trade school and went straight to a bay as a transmission tech… if you can demonstrate technical knowledge and prowess, you don’t have to start in the lube bay. Granted, my background was a bit different too. My dad retired from NASCAR where he was an engine builder for Richard Childress for 30 years. He literally built Dale Earnhardt’s engines. I learned pretty much everything about cars before I could even drive them.

I started as a lube tech at 16 at valvoline, got an apprenticeship at a local mopar dealer through our votech from my highschool. Got mentored by some amazing old master techs, I stayed around them and helped them as much as I could and any questions I had they answered. Got training through Chrysler then went to an independent shop and went flat rate. I learned a lot from working on different makes and models. Then went to my current shop which is an offroad shop and it’s been great. Been here 2 years, learned how to regear, got Yukon master certified, went to welding school and got certified and became lead tech making $44/hr at 23yo

Everything that this guy just says is 100% true, especially about being a lube tech. 25+ year service advisor year for Dodge, Jeep Chrysler and ram and he is describing exactly what we’re looking for in a lube Tech

I come from a strong mechanical background working on tractors, big trucks, diesels, fixing my own cars. Now I work at a parts store/repair shop, only work the front and don’t touch the cars and I absolutely HATE service writing….figured it would be the job for me coming from my past but I got a hard lesson

number one tip is go to a dealership that respects you. make your intentions clear but if they have no intention of letting you learn, go to a different shop. same applies in a program, its only as good as the dealership you're at. if they stick you in the lube rack for two years then throw you in the deep end as flat rate, you'll probably drown at first, which defeats the whole point

Wanting to do this bc it was my hobby was the biggest mistake of my life! Don’t ever turn your hobby into a career, bc the hobby part dies. At least for me.

I’m going to be a John Deere tech. 2 year program at university and over 50% paid for. Fully certified once I’m out of school and have a good relationship with higher ups in the dealership. But I agree 100%, dad owns an auto shop and we get guys from our quick lube to become apprentices and it works well.

the guy who taught me most of what I know, told me "if you love doing this, don't get paid to do it. you'll hate it and be miserable and won't do it as a hobby anymore." oh how true that was...
