@autism.vibes: A lot of late diagnosed autistic adults did show signs in childhood. The problem is that many of those signs did not match the narrow version of autism people were taught to look for. Some children were not disruptive. Some were very verbal. Some did well academically. Some seemed shy, gifted, anxious, mature, quirky, rigid, emotional, or “too sensitive.” So instead of being understood, they were mislabeled. • Too dramatic. • Too quiet. • Too intense. • Too picky. • Too anxious. • Too rigid. • Too smart to be autistic. • Too social to be autistic. Many learned early that being themselves brought confusion, correction, or rejection. So they adapted. They masked. They copied. They overanalyzed. They stayed exhausted. They tried to become acceptable instead of supported. That is why so many autistic adults reach adulthood before finally realizing: it was never a character flaw. It was never laziness. It was never “just anxiety.” It was never a lack of effort. It was autism that people did not know how to recognize. A late diagnosis can bring grief, relief, anger, validation, and clarity all at once. For many adults, it is the first time their life actually makes sense. What is often called “missed autism” was usually visible. People just did not understand what they were seeing. #AutismInAdults #LateDiagnosedAutistic #AutismAwareness #NeurodivergentAdults #ActuallyAutistic

Ok cool. So what do we do now. I currently can’t make phone calls or appointments. And I can’t go to the grocery store.

What is there to do after being tested later in life? I fit the bill for a lot of these but have never been tested are there any benefits besides knowing for sure?

I was LITERALLY obsessed with Nirvana in 4th grade. It's ALL I cared about and talked about. For like 2 years. I constantly listened to them and consumed everything from them I could get my hands on.

I often can’t fit into most millennial conversations and quotes because I was into what I was into growing up, needed and craved a routine and was even called gifted. I feel like I’m doing life wrong and a burden in relationships. Online venting has become my therapy because no one gets it and people here do

I used to hide away during story time or isolate myself during recess, when I was a toddler up until 4yrs old I used to rock side to side in front of the tv and played with my hair.

I'm diagnosed with ADHD and it's the only thing making me realize how much I mask and how to go about undoing that. I'm so deep in that pit that I have no idea what's masking or not...

I didn’t know I was autistic as a child, so growing up I always felt different but never understood why. A lot of things that seemed “normal” to other people were hard for me, and I used to think something was just wrong with me or that I was too sensitive. Getting diagnosed later in life helped me understand so much about my childhood and why I experienced things the way I did. Looking back, there were signs, but no one recognized them then. Now I’m learning more about myself and giving my younger self the understanding I wish I had.

Many of these overlap with ADHD also, so it’s important to seek professional advice when working through this discovery

I was diagnosed at 44 after almost 2 years of working with a psychiatrist. As I looked back on my life, it was like someone handed me a decoder ring, and I was able to better understand so many things that previously made zero sense.

Oh the signs were there. But nobody ever thought of autism. I was a child in the 80s. Autism was a thing for boys who were little math geniuses but started to scream and hit themselves when life got too much. That was the general idea of autism. I was a girl. I hid my traits. I was labeled shy, too sensitive, too difficult.
