Here’s what you need: -A strip of paper towel -Some isopropyl alcohol -And a black permanent marker Draw a line on the paper towel about an inch up from the bottom, and hang it in a glass with a bit rubbing alcohol so that the surface barely touches the bottom of the paper towel. This starts out fast, but could take an hour or so to see the separation depending on your marker. Try this with multiple brands of markers so that you can compare and contrast their ink colors!

We use these a lot in medical lab. It’s the basic concept behind many molecular testing, pregnancy and drug tests, and rapid Covid, flu, or strep tests. It’s also used in more difficult tests like separating hemoglobin types.
