It’s also referring to America as a symbol of empire. The real meaning of what they’re saying is “Down with Imperialism”.

I was never able to learn a foreign language properly because I couldn’t wrap my head around the one to one thing. Now, in my late 30’s, I started learning Japanese (I moved past the whole 1:1 thing finally) and now Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian are starting to make so much more sense to me 🤦‍♂️I wish I could go back in time and slap myself across the face…

One of my Cuban friends constantly said “throw me a picture and put me a ringtone” cuz that’s the direct translation from Spanish (Tírame una foto y ponme un tono).

I grew up with my mom saying Jaroo or Brooming for the action of sweeping. Until I was 18 I thought we Broomed the floor. It wasn’t until I offered to “broom” at a friend’s house that I learned the term sweep. 😂

Yep. I lived in Kuwait for many years. Arabic translations were very different from how native speakers would say things. One that comes to mind is "Open the AC." "Open the lights." I still say stuff like this because I picked it up. "Too much full" is another.

"Down with" is English slang anyway. Not like we say "Up with" when meaning to start or create something... In fact, the word down, as a preposition, is a horrible marker for cessation.
