@myteacherface: We saw this coming. Students stopped reading for enjoyment. They stopped socializing. They stopped participating. They stopped caring. We sounded the alarms, then Covid hit and made every burgeoning situation 100x worse. Banning phones during school hours and reining in technology during the school day are great starts, but we have a long way to go! Unchecked home use of phones, technology access from age 1 on, no unstructured play, no socialization with peers without adult coordination, and the list goes on. (*For decades, various special interest groups have tried to discredit and undermine public education. What we’re seeing now —vouchers, scripted curriculum, attacks on teachers, unfounded accusations of indoctrination—was a coordinated, multifaceted plan to drive the final nail into the coffin of public education. We can’t let that happen!) #myteacherface #education #teacher #publicschool #school

As a high school student right now living in Texas, I can say that the new law in texas making phones illegal during school hours is worth it. As much as I hate to say it, it works so well. Ive noticed me and my peers are so much more focused and all of our grades are definitely higher. I would be in support of the law being passed everywhere!

I teach in a screen free k-8 school (in the middle school portion) and difference in students who are restricted in their tech use at home vs those who aren’t is crazy

The research supporting this was available even before the proliferation of social media which is why I raised my kids without TV, phone, video games or computers (I homeschooled until high school) & my kids were always the top of the class & both now scholarship college grads

I completely agree. Not to blame teachers in any way for this issue, but there is a reason for technology use. I’m writing a book from a teenage perspective using a systemic approach to understanding why we act the way we do within the education system. The main point of it is that students resort to technology as a rational solution within an irrational system since grades have trumped learning.

We need to reverse tech use in school. Even if there is excessive use at home, at least there would be a separation at school with the understanding that we learn from the teacher and not a device.

As a young teacher i remember my school years vividly. What happens now is much worse, not just in the USA. It's the chat gpt writing their essays, doing their homeworks... they stopped being curious, stopped doing research by themselves. The deterioration is real.

Administrators of schools need to tackle this problem since there are so many of them and they are being paid the high salaries and this falls under their job description. You cannot expect a teacher to teach and also patrol 30 students in a classroom at the same time. It is impossible and administrators need to start doing their jobs.

I’ve come think we’re also so desensitized to crazy horrid issues going on in the world to the point grades and attendance just aren’t that big of a deal. I think we have worse things to handle and we can’t afford to be invested in school anymore

i think my handwriting wouldve been more better if there was a good balance between online work and paperwork... ofc its not exactly all the teachers fault, my parents shouldve taught me too but they both work full time jobs... but i mainly blame the school and the push to more technology... so now people think that writing on paper is completely useless lol...

My high school students have had iPads since elementary school. It's a problem. One day, the wifi cut out and no one could teach since they put our textbooks online and printers couldn't connect to laptops to print anything.

AI also adds onto the short attention spam especially when students are just “Oh let me just ask chat gpt to write this paper” or “let me let chat gpt give me the answer”

I took tablets away and YouTube off our tv. I bought a VHS tv and only let my toddlers watch those. Because I realized my older two have bad technology addiction and I wanted to help my younger two not have that for as long as I could
