Except she actually didn’t do it. And she knows what she planned was wrong and has remorse for it

Like she was clearly a dumb tumblr teen who fell into the mass shooter fetish community. Many such cases!!!

while I agree. Some people are lacking the ability to understand that Emma did do a bad thing. Belittling her struggles also goes against the movies narrative. Her parents were never home. She was bullied. She felt like she had no friends. Of course, these are not good reasons to do what she did. the pipeline of people who experienced these things and actually commit to being a school🔫 exists. Her lack of a “good reason” is realistic

I really hate this trend of discussions needing to have one answer and one answer only. Multiple things can be true at the same time I think

This video perfectly encapsulates the American problem the movie tries to point out. There were reasons for what she almost did, they dont have to make sense to me and you and reasons are not excuses. She planned to do something unforgivable she didnt do it and that's the point.

no, we're not making excuses. but the point is you can't judge a 30 year old for something they almost did 15 years ago, 'almost' being the operative word.

the movie wants you to sit in the discomfort of immorality and how we define who is truly a good or bad person it’s okay to admit her actions were wrong

i agree that the film doesn’t make excuses and we shouldn’t either but i think painting her parents as loving is a stretch when all we know of them during childhood is they were never there.

I think that’s kinda the point. She didn’t really have any “good reason” to do it. There IS NO good reason to do that. But the fact that she never went through with her worst thing ever done, but the others did, while simultaneously being the morally “good” ones who pass judgement over and over, and she’s cast as the worst one, is the point.

And the film does not “make it clear she comes from a loving household” it intentionally does not show her parents being present at all when she’s a child.

But when Charlie said he bullied someone so much they had to move??? And everyone laughed??????Same thing with Mike and Rachel? Rachels story makes no sense. They all DID something bad where Emma thought about it obviously regretted it so much and actually changed. Helloooo???

I really disagree with this take. she was bullied and there is no evidence of her parents being "loving". I don't her thoughts at all but what you've said is not what the film depicted at all.

mckabe.hasty :
The reality of the situation is not the same as her perception, so just because she wasn’t viciously bullied doesn’t mean she couldn’t have felt that way. Her parents were loving but they were never around which is why she felt isolated and craved some sort of social connection and acceptance. She wasn’t excused just because, she was excused by most because she grew and learned from the mistake she almost made. Meanwhile everyone else at that table actually did what they said they did.
