@domaexp1: Fred Hampton was a prominent African American activist, orator, and revolutionary socialist who rose to prominence in his late teens and early 20s. He served as chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party and deputy chairman nationally. He began his activism in the NAACP’s youth council, where he organized protests, walkouts against racism, and efforts to improve services for Black children. Hampton identified as a Marxist-Leninist and revolutionary socialist. He viewed racism not as the root problem but as a byproduct of capitalist oppression and class struggle. He argued that true liberation required international proletarian revolution and solidarity across racial lines, famously stating: “We say you don’t fight racism with racism—we’re gonna fight racism with solidarity. We say you don’t fight capitalism with no black capitalism; you fight capitalism with socialism.” He saw fascism as the greatest immediate threat to Black communities and advocated community control of police, armed self-defense against brutality (in line with BPP principles), and socialist programs to meet people’s material needs. His approach emphasized “power to the people” through education, organization, and direct action rather than narrow nationalism. He helped establish and lead the Illinois BPP chapter starting in 1968, implementing community “survival programs” such as the Free Breakfast for Children Program, free medical clinics, and political education classes. He negotiated a truce among rival Chicago street gangs to reduce infighting and redirect their energy toward social change. He founded the original Rainbow Coalition, a multicultural alliance that united the Black Panthers with the Young Lords and the Young Patriots. This anti-racist, anti-classist coalition tackled shared issues like police brutality, housing, education, unemployment, and poverty through joint action and community services. On December 4, 1969, at age 21, Hampton was assassinated in a pre-dawn raid on his Chicago apartment. The police slipped a sedative into Hampton’s drink the night before, leaving him unconscious. Police fired over 90 rounds into the apartment; the Panthers fired only one shot (reflexively from Mark Clark, who was also killed). Hampton was shot in the shoulder while sleeping next to his pregnant fiancée (Akua Njeri/Deborah Johnson), then executed with two point-blank shots to the head. Four other Panthers were wounded, and survivors were arrested. Authorities initially claimed a “shootout,” but evidence (including photos and ballistics) showed it was one-sided. No officers were convicted criminally, though civil suits later resulted in settlements. #fredhampton #socialism #leftist #socialist #marx
