What’s often missing here is how capitalism turns even communal foraging into a commodity. When people sell what they forage, it shifts plants from use‑value to exchange‑value—often at the expense of those who rely on these spaces for subsistence and cultural survival. So the real question is: how do we protect the commons in a system that commodifies everything? Is regulation or permitting the answer—and if so, how do we ensure it doesn’t reproduce the same inequities?

Here is my big thing about “over harvesting” from the perspective of a mutual aid organiser. Much like with our free stores and food shares, we see folks we think might be taking more than they need, but we don’t always know what need they are addressing. Obvious commercial harvesting aside, we don’t always know how many folks are being fed by a single foraging community member.

both takes valid. my only critique of the permit idea is they cost money which leads back into affecting the underprivileged. if we could get a free permit system going just to track who is taking what, that would be great, but I don't think our bureaucracy could handle that

Alexis! you may be interested in the policy research of Elinor Ostrom. she is an expert in how people manage public goods, such as forageable public property. She's done groundbreaking research on how indigenous communities manage things like irrigation systems, local fishery spaces, etc.

In Denmark we have this exelent foraging law, where you can bring a hatfull (1-2liters) from where ever you are foraging, and I just find it very whimsical and makes you mindfull of not overforaging ☺️

I think you’re looking for “everything in moderation.” It’s something my mom has always said, and I think it applies here. You should be allowed to forage and find good, free, healthy food, but not too much.

I absolutely support foraging permits, earned after participating in classes on effective forager's land and resource conservation in the area. I absolutely think the information needs to be shared and the spaces respected, community style.

In Germany we have limitations for foraging, like you can forage a bouquet of herbs, not more. Also not in protected areas.

As someone’s who’s worked in the park service, I think there are times we do need to limit where people can forage due to ecological impact but i would always direct people to places where they could forage and good practices for it

I think permits on public land like Christmas tree permits would be reasonable. Or maybe a license and limits like with fishing.
