@motormouthpediatrics: Feeding therapy is not just about “getting” a child to eat the food. It’s about helping them learn to: ✨ tolerate it ✨ touch it ✨ explore it ✨ smell it ✨ self-feed it ✨ feel safe around it Because for many kids, eating is the very last step, not the first. Playing with food and self-feeding aren’t “wasting time.” They’re how kids build: • sensory tolerance • confidence • motor skills • trust around food Sometimes the mess is the progress. 💛 ✨ If you need help with this at home, my Picky Eater Guide is linked in my bio. #feedingtherapy #pickyeating #toddlereating #sensorykids #pediatricslp

When my son was in it they made “sculptures” with peanut butter and animal crackers once and without even thinking he licked the peanut butter off his finger realized he liked it and from then on has eaten it since!

My daughter did feeding therapy and it helped her a lot. I also learned so much. She still has foods she will not eat but she’s no longer mad when I introduce new foods to her or when her food is not to her liking 😩😂

i think alot of people really overlook how important it is to have a healthy relationship with food 😩 the more your brain associates food with negativity the more your body and mind will reject it, even when theres nothing actually wrong with it

I dont think you want to forcefully shove the food in, because then it creates further issues with the child. So you touch, praise, smell, praise, play with, praise, lick, praise, finally eat and praise. It can take many sessions though, depending on how the child reacts. This is for anyone wondering.

Weeeeeeelllllllll…the ultimate goal is to eat. No one pays for expensive therapy to learn to play with food as the goal. An objective? Absolutely. The goal? Nope.

Need my son in food therapy but no. We don’t play with food. Food isn’t a toy. He can touch it all he wants but we’re not gonna sit and make it a game.

My son was in feedng therapy at 10 and it helped so much. I didn't know that was thing or I would have put him in it sooner. It was amazing how more open he got with eating because I was stressed 😭 Truly appreciate the work you do!

I agree with others. The goal is to eat. Otherwise, there would be no need for feeding therapy. This is also just one approach, and usually for mild to moderate cases. For cases where a feeding tube is a real possibility, other more intensive feeding therapies may be warranted.

as an RBT with ARFID, working with my sensory seeking kiddos who "play " with their food, definitely triggered me however it also allowed me to sit back and d observe them on how they process food which weirdly helped me understand hahaha love my kiddos

I'm 26 and literally using feeding therapy strategies that I've looked up on myself to try to expand my diet. Do the feeding therapy with your kids so they aren't doing it by themselves as adults!

Eating truly is the goal. We can help acceptance of texture, temperature, color, smell, appearance, taste, etc. We can work on chewing patterns and jaw strength and tongue movements and swallow patterns. But from the perspective of the parent, (and me as a speech pathologist) the end goal is indeed to eat. This goal may take a while to achieve, and can absolutely incorporate food play; however, the entire point of feeding therapy is to help the child eat.
